Kinja'd!!!

(Not the actual car, but same generation and body style, ours was red)

7. Pontiac Sunbird, one of the first cars I remember my parents owning, and my first and only memory of it was us stranded in the car park of our apartment building. Good times.

Kinja'd!!!

(Looked almost exactly like this, beat to shit, burgundy. Only difference was that ours had no hubcaps.)

6. Plymouth Voyager, the first real car I got acquainted with, I also, like the Sunbird, remember it being a massive hunk of shit.

Kinja'd!!!

(Not actual car, ours was once again burgundy, seeing a trend here.)

5. Saturn SL1 Auto, parents got it for free, only lasted like a year, was “meh”.

Kinja'd!!!

(Not actual car once again, not sure what the actual colour was)

4. Chevy Sprint, absolutely no memories of it whatsoever, as I wasn’t even born yet. But I’ve always had a weird thing for the OG Sprint, especially the Turbo. Apparently my parents looked at a Turbo originally, but decided to go with the standard.

Kinja'd!!!

(Exact colour and hubcaps, once again not actual car.)

3. Saturn SL1 Manual, This thing was the epitome of early 90s GM, ran like shit, broke down all the time, but it just kept on going. Eventually conked out in 2009. But it made several trips from Edmonton to the furthest reaches of Alberta and all the way to Victoria. Surprisingly.

Kinja'd!!!

(Not actual car, same colour though.)

2. 2009 Kia Rio, Now hear me out, this thing kicked ass! Or, at least it did stepping up from a shitty ‘92 Saturn. But anyways, this was the first new car I remember my parents getting, and even though it was the most basic model available (manual everything, including transmission, no ABS, rear drums, no A/C), to step into it after the Saturn, it was ridiculously amazing.

Kinja'd!!!

(Actual picture, for once)

1. 2014 Kia Optima LX, like stepping up from the Saturn to the Rio, getting into this thing for the first time was amazing. For once there was actual working A/C!, and power everything! And heated front seats! Even if it’s the base model, stepping into this thing was like stepping into an S-Class compared to the Rio.

That’s actually pretty amazing, haven’t seen a first generation Sprint/Swift/Firefly in ages.

Apparently South Carolina is where old shitboxes go to live another life. Yesterday I saw a mint 1980’s Tercel hatch, and the day before I saw a running/driving Festiva. There is also a graveyard of them near the lake.

Before my existence: La Bamba Whale, 1972 Impala with 350 V8

Rated entirely subjectively:

1. 1996 Impala SS, Black. I think I’ve gushed about this car enough on oppo/jalopnik

2. 1969 C10, Blue/white/red krylon. Hated being dropped off in this beater truck as a kid, now I want one. As soon as I began to appreciate the old bird my dad stuffed it into a guardrail. Was a mishmash of GM parts when it finally kicked the bucket. 350 from ‘72 Impala, transmission (4spd auto) from somewhere, C/20 rear axle. A real hodge podge inside and out. For a few months required me to stomp on the floorboard to get the starter to catch. By far the most Jalop* vehicle my family has ever owned.

*not hipster brown diesel wagons, the real definition.

3. 1971 Nova Coupe, WR Blue. My dad’s proudest project started as a half rusted economy car (I6/3spd auto) and wound up with an overbored 396 big block. Since he passed it really has been neglected, probably going to move on to selling it soon. It’s objectively a cool car, but it’s not my thing. honestly the most cherished memory I have of this car is spending months bickering with my dad on the definition of “blue”. Subaru World Rally Blue was the correct definition.

4. 1982 Camaro Berlinetta, brown/dark brown 2 tone. 305/5spd. Overheated in North Texas traffic in the early 90’s. I remember my rear facing car seat in the passenger seat.

5. 2014 Impala LTZ, Dark Blue Metallic. Nothing to stir the soul but looks good in top trim and the rear seat area dwarfs anything I’ve sat in. Makes the SS feel cramped.

6. 1993 Ford Mustang 5.0 LX, Black. Think it was a manual, could be mistaken. Apparently had suspect handling at ~100mph. Traded towards the Impala. Remember my Dad getting pulled for those ‘smoked’ lenses. It was the mid 90’s, can’t judge.

7. 2003 Impala. My mom travelled a lot and often drove rental cars. so when she needed a commuter she picked the most rentally car in the universe. Smooth highway cruiser and good mpgs. Really shat the bed after 110k miles

8. 1991 Dodge Daytona, white/red/maroon. Winter beater that was acquired somehow or another, as a 13/14 year old was looking forward to making out with girls in the rear hatch area when I got my license. It was not to be as it had moved on for reasons that I don’t recall.

9. 1989 Beretta GT, white. Was going to be my first car, was too much of a project for my talent/interest (blown motor). Eventually was sent to have the work done and was relegated to beater status for my dad. Beater was the Beretta’s natural born status. headliner fell off, random leak to fill floorboard with water, Lock-up torque converter that didn’t unlock when coming to a stop, strange carvings in the dashboard.... Died doing what it hated. I had already paid for an auto-x intending to use the Mk2 which had sprung a leak. Am I just supposed to not auto-x? (apparently the answer was yes) By the second run I knew something was wrong. after the 3rd run I knew something was very wrong. Made it 5 excruciating miles down the interstate on the way home when it just ran out of power.

10. 199(2?) Ford F-150, maroon. My mom had bought this for my dad for Christmas intending to get rid of the old ugly C/10. My dad had it returned.
